The PD400 lathe is unequalled in its class. Proxxon states, "Don't waste your time if you are trying to find similar value for the money.THMStore agrees this is a very high value and accurate machine tool.

This machine is produced in Austria*. This is not a low quality Asian copy. It may require up to 8 to 10 weeks delivery from Proxxon in Germany as this product is not (yet) highly stocked for the US market. This is because of its European metric-only configuration. It is extreamly popular and proven machine tool throughout Europe so it is not a new design. There are no plans for a U.S. inch version that THMStore is aware. But not a problem...

This machine can easily be run in the U.S. from a commonly available voltage step up transformer if 220 volts is not available. An Internet search on "step up transformer" will reveal several reasonably priced supliers. The dial calibrations of 0.05 mm are very close to 0.002 inches for all but final precision cuts. (This assumption will leave inch measurement safely oversize.) No operational reasons this isn't a good investment for the U.S. machinist.

Technical Data:

Center distance 400 mm (15.76 inches), center height 85 mm (3.35 inches or 6.7 inch swing). The swing over the top slide is 116 mm (4.57 inches). Solid ribbed bed is made of quality cast iron with ground and hardened ways. Oversized spindle with two adjustable taper bearings, MT 3 taper and 20.5 mm (0.8 inch) bore. Run out without chuck, 5/1000 mm (0.00002 inch)

The precision 3 jaw chuck has a capacity of up to 100 mm (3.94 inches). Six spindle speeds are provided via belt drive and two speed motor: LOW: 80/330/1,400 rpm HIGH: 160/660/2,800 rpm. Powerful, quite 220 Volt capacitor motor with 550W output (>3/4 hp input), All adjusting wheels fitted with scales that may be zeroed. 1 division = 0.05 mm (0.00197 inch) {in U.S. think ~ 0.002 inches} The auto feed has two speeds of 0.07 (0.00276) and 0.14 (.0055) mm(inch)/rev.

Integrated change gears provides 19 pitches: 0.2 – 0.25 – 0.3 – 0.35 – 0.4 – 0.45 – 0.5 – 0.6 – 0.7 – 0.75 – 0.8 – 0.9 – 1.0 – 1.25 – 1.50 – 1.75 – 2.0 – 2.5 – 3.0 mm. Imperial threads of 10 – 48 TPI are also possible. A rotating live center MK 2 and 10 mm (> 3/8 inch) MT 2 gear chuck are included. Cross slide travels 85 mm (3.35 inches) and top slide 55 mm (2.17 inches) swivels through 45 degrees for taper turning. Tailstock is MT 2 taper, spindle travel is 40 mm (1.58 inches) and diameter 24 mm (0.95 inches) supplied with Metric scale.

Approximate overall size is 900 mm (35.4 inches) x 400 (15.75 inches) x 300 mm (11.8 inches). Weight is approximately 45 kg (100 lbs). Cutter size of 10 x 10 mm ( ~ 3/8 x 3/8 inches) Includes 2 individual quick change holders.

    I've owned my PD 400 for 2 years now; it was the first lathe I have ever owned or used.

    It had one problem, but I was never sure whether it was my ignorance, or a real problem with the lathe.

    Trying to drive the carriage with the lead screw (either powered or by using the lead screw hand wheel) resulting in very severe binding of the carriage. I even broke some of the included brass shear pins in the lead screw drive train trying to diagnose this problem.

    As I got more experienced with the lathe, I realized that there was an actual manufacturing flaw in the lathe, but I had already owned the lathe for over a year, so I assumed that I would have to purchase any replacement parts, and since I wasn't exactly sure what the problem was, I did not want to buy a set of parts hoping one of them would fix the problem.

    So, I wrote to Prox-Tech here in the states, and described the problem in as much detail as I could. They forwarded my email to the engineers in Austria, who then emailed me directly with suggestions and things to try.

    However, the next day, before I could even attempt to implement their suggestions, I got another email from the engineer saying that one of the senior technicians remembered similar problems with the prototypes in 2000. Therefore, they were shipping me a complete apron assembly, with hand wheel, gears and half screw and lever, a new rack gear, and some more shear pins, all at no charge to me.

    They arrived yesterday, installation took me about 15 minutes, and it completely solved the problem. Power feed and threading work perfectly now, the carriage moves smoothly and precisely.

    One cannot ask for better customer service than that!
